Tell us your favorite moment at Swab 2021
I always enjoy receiving people who are interested in the artists’ proposals of the EPHEMERAL Program and being able to tell them more about it. Sharing the work done with the public, collectors and other people is one of the things I like the most.

What’s something you discovered at Swab 2021 that really sticked to your mind?
I really liked Violeta Mayoral’s proposal at etHall gallery in Barcelona, this year we are lucky that Violeta returns to Swab as part of the Ephemeral program, and she will captivate us again with her new proposal.

What’s something you saw at Swab 2021 that you don’t typically see at other fairs?
One thing that I really like about Swab and that differentiates it from other fairs is that because of its size and configuration, it generates a very pleasant and relaxed atmosphere that gives the feeling of community.

How would you describe Swab 2021 to someone who could not visit it?
It was very nice to regain the physical attendance and I think you could feel it in the atmosphere, a lot of excitement and expectation to meet again in the pavilion.

What projects are keeping you busy these days that swabbers should stay tuned for?
Undoubtedly, the preparation of the fifth edition of the EPHEMERAL program that I curate with Margot Cuevas, we already have the artists and we are working on this year’s proposals.

SWAB Barcelona – Video Box 2022

VIDEO BOX 2022

This year El Salvador takes over the Video Box program, which has established itself as the video art section of the fair. This program, entitled “Entangled/Entretegidos”, will be carried out by Y.ES Contemporary, curated by Omar Lopez-Chahoud and Patricio Majano.

Entangled/Entretejidos is a project that presents videos that address the different ways in which artists connect to their identity as Salvadorans. The notions that exist around this identity are complex, partly because they derive from diverse sources, including the heritage of native peoples, a colonial past, a civil war, and mass migration. The history of each individual constitutes a node that exists in this complex web. Identity is thus the fabric that has been created by weaving together unique threads, that is, all the heterogeneous experiences that can be understood as Salvadoran.

Microsoft Word Dossier Víctor Hugo Portillo.docx
Monólogo brevísimo, Víctor Hugo Portillo

Entangled/Entretejidos reflects and problematizes these concepts of identity related to the idea of the Mother Country and linked to migration. At the same time, the project starts from plurality to consider identity as something malleable and fluid, not limited to a specific region. Through the experiences of Salvadoran people, it seeks to address an issue that is of global relevance and that finds parallels in many other regions.

Tell us your favorite moment at Swab 2021
My favourite moments were definitely the four performances… Maybe it’s wrong to say it because I’m the curator, but I very much enjoyed them, it was a real pleasure to work with Laura Llaneli, Gino Rubert, Violeta Mayoral and Mariona Moncunill…

What’s something you discovered at Swab 2021 that really sticked to your mind?
I loved the work of Helena Vinent, Paco Chanivet, Marc Herrero, Joan Pallé and Alán Carrasco.

What’s something you discovered at Swab 2021 that really sticked to your mind?
The most interesting thing about Swab is its “human” dimensions, the small scale allows you to stop and spend time at each stand without that “FOMO” that forces a frenetic pace. It’s a luxury to be able to stroll around the fair and find international artists you didn’t know before. And, what’s more, at prices that allow you to take them home with you.

How would you describe Swab 2021 to someone who couldn’t visit it?
I would tell them not to miss it next year 🙂

What projects are keeping you busy these days that swabbers should stay tuned for?
Luckily, there are several projects keeping me busy these days. As well as coordinating all the projects of the cultural platform Hänsel* i Gretel* (stay tuned, you’ll soon be able to listen to a series of podcasts we’ve been recording for months with artists as important as Joan Fontcuberta and Ignasi Aballí), I’m curating, together with Roc Parés, a major solo exhibition by Gino Rubert at the Tecla Sala Art Centre. I’m also particularly excited to present the second edition of Glutamato, a personal project that seeks to “promote”, hence its name, projects by artists with whom I share space in the space for creation and thought FASE. This time it will be with Ricardo Cárdenas.

Tell us your favorite moment at Swab 2021
Swab is very charming, as always: you can always discover new artists, meeting new people – artists, gallerists, curators, and collectors – absorbing positive energies while freely walking around and breathing.

What’s something you discovered at Swab 2021 that really sticked to your mind?
Instinctively retracing the images and memories from the past edition of SWAB 2021, some of my favourite proposals were: Lily Robert – Paris, PIEDRAS – Buenos Aires, CAVE-AYUMIGALLERY – Tokyo, Patricia Fleming – Glasgow, and Badr El Jundi – Marbella.

What’s something you discovered at Swab 2021 that really sticked to your mind?
Total and honest democracy, proposals that are always new and original, and the perfect weather.

How would you describe Swab 2021 to someone who couldn’t visit it?
What I find very attractive about Swab is its democratic will: the fair offers a perfect balance between emerging proposals and well established projects. Furthermore, it provides the visitor with a very interesting portrait of what is happening both on thelocal and the international artistic scene, reuniting galleries and independent spaces from all over the world. All in all, I believe that people should go to Swab to keep their curiosity alive.

What projects are keeping you busy these days that swabbers should stay tuned for?
I’m currently traveling to Rome because I’ll spend a couple of days at the Swiss Institute visiting all the artists in residence, as a guest curator.

I am Jan Cornet. I am art. I am Barcelona. I am Swab.

In one sentence, how would you describe your relationship with acting?
It is one of the ways I have found that allow me to express myself, to show my view of the world and the human being. A job that I enjoy very much and that connects me with play.

A place in the city that connects you with art?
The Sagrada Familia, MACBA and Parc Güell

If Barcelona was an art work, what would you name it?
The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare

A message to young creatives?
Above all, they should listen to their instinct and their heart.

What projects are currently keeping you busy?
I am currently developing an audiovisual project as a creator called Los Hijos de Adán (Adam’s Children).

SWAB Barcelona talks in Mediterranean blue

SWAB BARCELONA TALKS IN
MEDITERRANEAN BLUE

Swab Barcelona, announces the dates of its new edition, from October 6 to 9, with a focus on its Mediterranean DNA.

Swab Barcelona announces its 15th edition, which will take place from October 6 to 9, and will be held, once again, at the Italian Pavilion of Montjuïc, welcoming 80 local and international galleries that will showcase the latest trends in contemporary art. The selection of the participating galleries will be in charge of the members of the Selection Committee, this year integrated by curators Omar Lopez Chahoud, Jerome Pantalacci and Domenico de Chirico; and by collectors Giuseppe Casarotto, Marie Elena Angulo and Jose Luis Lorenzo.

Like every edition, the fair presents the hard core of its proposals in the General Program, which brings together international and national galleries, through its From Home initiative, and local ones, through its collaboration with Art Barcelona. On the other hand, Swab continues the subsection of the General Program, Emerging, which presents galleries under five years old in order to be a platform for the discovery of new projects. In this line, and following the inertia launched during the previous edition, Emerging strengthens its LATAM Focus, curated by Santiago Gasquet, co-director of PIEDRAS (Buenos Aires), who will bring to Barcelona the most emerging proposals of the Latin American contemporary scene.

This year, Swab highlights its Mediterranean identity, and presents the Eastern Mediterranean scene, featuring projects from Turkey, Libya, Cyprus, Tunisia and Egypt. This project will be extended in the coming editions, generating dialogue among the territories surrounding our sea, an initiative that seeks to create shared synergies between projects in the region.

Once again, Swab reinforces its special programs Swab Performance and Swab Ephemeral. The first one, curated by Gisela Chillida, will feature the performative acts of four artists, each of them represented by a Barcelona gallery participating in Swab. Following the dynamics established in the previous edition, these performances will take place in the galleries themselves, in order to generate a valuable artistic circuit that goes beyond the fair’s pavilion.

Swab Ephemeral, on the other hand, will present the installation proposals of the edition, curated once again by Caterina Almirall and Margot Cuevas, who will select the works of four artists residing in the city’s creation factories: Hangar, Fabra i Coats and Escocesa.

Among the fair’s regular curated programs is Swab on Paper, the section curated by Carolina Diez-Cascón that explores the possibilities of paper as a media and as a technique. For this new edition, she proposes 5 projects that will discuss the body as a natural element through paper. In line with the above, keeping up with its aim of exploring new exhibition formats, Swab continues with Swab Reading, the fair’s publishing program, which features projects that work on the publication as an artistic object.

Finally, Swab maintains as its central mission the support to the youngest projects through its Swab Seed and MYFAF programs.  The former, the most experimental section of the fair, welcomes projects that break with the traditional concept of the gallery and explore alternative exhibition formats. MYFAF, on the other hand, is positioned as the program for galleries that are just getting started, as it grants the participation of three exhibition spaces that have not yet participated in an art fair.

Swab21dscf4974
Espai Colona, Barcelona. Swab Seed

Swab Barcelona is consolidated as a fair with a human dimension, which seeks to discover new voices of contemporary art, from a sustainable cultural production and always with a gender perspective.

Finally, with the support of ARTLAND, the virtualization platform for artistic content, Swab maintains an online version of the fair in parallel to the on-site event, giving access to its program to the whole world and favoring the international projection of its participants.

Tell us your favorite moment at Swab 2021
Meeting many artists, gallerists, collectors and curators during the opening night of the fair. The majority of the fairs were postponed due to the pandemic, so Swab was one of the first opportunities to catch up with my colleagues, and see what new projects artists have been working on over the past year.

What’s something you discovered at Swab 2021 that really sticked to your mind?
Some that first come to mind: Christian Newby at Patricia Fleming, Inma Femenia at Punto Gallery, Carla Hayes Mayoral and Eleonora Agostini at Badr El Jundi’s booth, photographic compositions of Andrea Monti at Transmitter, and many others.

What’s something you discovered at Swab 2021 that really sticked to your mind?
There were quite a few project spaces, artist-run spaces and non-profits participating at the fair that are not traditional commercial galleries, like the Green Parrott, New Jörg Vienna, and others. This really helps bring a more diverse selection of works and artists to the fair. Also, the geography of the galleries was quite broad, ranging from Eastern Europe and Latin America to many local galleries, which was nice to explore.

How would you describe Swab 2021 to someone who couldn’t visit it?
A lively, energetic fair where you can discover a lot of new talent. A friendly, unimtimidating space to meet artists, gallerists and acquire works (even if they are your first ones) in one of the most exciting cities in Europe.

What projects are keeping you busy these days that swabbers should stay tuned for?
I’ll be launching a new lecture series on contemporary art, art market and art history later this year. Also, this year is one where many key art events coincide (Documenta, Venice Biennial, Manifesta, Riga Biennial all the fairs etc) so I hope to attend and keep you posted via social media stories and art reviews.

SWAB 2022 CURATOR TALKS

Tell us your favorite moment at Swab 2021
Some of the proposals that I loved from my first experience at the fair were the stand of CAVE-AYUMIGALLERY and a gallery from Tokyo that presented paintings by two of its artists represented in in an impeccable curatorial exhibit. I was also very interested in the work of the artist Kerstin Pfefferkorn presented at Bark BerlinGallery. Also I can not miss the beautiful work done by the projects that participated in the Focus Latam with whom I had the pleasure to work.

What’s something you discovered at Swab 2021 that really sticked to your mind?
Something that I can highlight and that caught my attention in my experience in Swab 2021 was to find a familiar work team, which developed the integral work of the fair and always faced with affection the problems that arose.

How would you describe Swab 2021 to someone who couldn’t visit it?
An opportunity to visit a contemporary art fair that can be visited placidly and without any rush, since it is designed in a way that the spectator can enjoy all the proposals, dedicating the necessary time to each one and not ending up exhausted. Besides being realized in Barcelona, a city that adds to the event its own attractions.

What projects are keeping you busy these days that swabbers should stay tuned for?
At this exact moment I’m working on the participation of PIEDRAS in the next edition of ARCO in February, where we will present a Solo Show by Jimena Croceri.
At the same time we are also working on the presentation of Mónica Heller’s project at the 59th Venice Biennale which opens in April this year. Heller was chosen as the artist who will represent our country in the Argentine Pavilion at the Biennale.

SWAB talks with… Kosmos

“I am art. I am Barcelona. I am Swab” is a series of interviews with relevant people of the Barcelona creative environment, whose aim is to enhance the cultural network of the city.

Today we talk to Kosmos, dj and electronic music pioneer in Spain.

I am Kosmos. I am art. I am Barcelona. I am Swab.

In one sentence, how would you describe your relationship with music?
It is a visceral relationship. I think, breathe, eat and dream music. And I work with it by transforming it, twisting it, mixing it…

A place in the city that connects you with art?
There are many, but one that I particularly like is the Mies Van Der Rohe Hall.

If Barcelona was an art work, what would you name it?
Boat, sky and waves

A message to young creatives?
To be themselves, not to be influenced by trends and to forget a little bit about social medias.

What projects are currently keeping you busy?
I have recovered an old production project, which I share with Xavier and Eduard Alarcón: Vanguard, in which we are working again. I’m still working on my radio show “303” on Betevé with Ginebra, on Shadow Traxx with Oddzero. I’m also still working on my record label Tempesta Music. I’m looking forward to performing in front of the public again, especially in my residencies Bass Bunny, Nitsa (both at Apolo) and Macarena. I also have a project with my wife Natalia Politowa and the Raima paper shop, called “Evenings At Raima” where we try to mix art and music once a month.

Kosmos 1 1

Kosmos is not a dj that leaves you unmoved. Pioneer of electronic music in Spain, his importance in the evolution of our nightclubs culture is undoubted, being not only an elite dj, but also an activist. He also hosts the program of radio 303 en Betevé, produces under the names such as Vanguard and Shadow Traxx and runs his record label Tempesta Music.

SWAB 2021 CURATOR TALKS
by CAROLINA DÍEZ-CASCÓN

Tell us your favorite moment at Swab 2021
My favorite moment is the arrival of the exhibitors for the first time at the fair, that’s when we start creating the family of each edition and exchanging the energy and excitement of so many different countries and artistic contexts coming together in the pavilion.

What’s something you discovered at Swab 2021 that really sticked to your mind?
That’s a hard question, since this edition presented very vibrant and high-quality proposals.
I would highlight both of the focus, Eastern Europe and LATAM, which for many were the most revealing in terms of discovering galleries and artists. I found particularly interesting the proposal of Sofie Švejdová from Karpuchina Gallery.
Other proposals that caught my eye were the work of Anjuli Rathod at Selenas Mountain, the booth proposal of Green Parrot at Seed and also, probably due to my background in fashion, I was very passionate about Christian Newby pieces at Patricia Fleming.

Sofie Švejdová, Karpuchina Gallery, Prague

What’s something you saw at Swab 2021 that you don’t typically see at other fairs?
What I find very unique about Swab is the combination of its wide and international proposals, with several curated projects and parallel events, with the fact that it’s a small family-run art fair.
It is a fair that gathers the latest trends of the contemporary art world and visiting it allows you to see new proposals yet to be shown at other fairs or platforms. All in all, I think Swab is a reference to discover unknown emerging proposals.

How would you describe Swab 2021 to someone who couldn’t visit it?
Revealing and cool

What projects are keeping you busy these days?
Working on Swab 2022 edition, plenty of exciting things to come.
