SWAB TALKS WITH… Nacho Alegre

“I am art. I am Barcelona. I am Swab” is a series of interviews with relevant people of the Barcelona creative environment, whose aim is to enhance the cultural network of the city.

Today we speak with Nacho Alegre, photographer, publicist and creative director of Apartamento Magazine.

I am Nacho Alegre. I am art. I am Barcelona. I am Swab.

A word that describes Barcelona?
Tragic

Is your place of creation, the studio, inspired by your city?
Yes, and I also try to fill it with objects that remind me of Barcelona.

If Barcelona was an art work, what would you name it?
The Gatopardo

A place in the city that connects you with art?
The Raval at night still makes you believe you live in an exciting city.

A message to young creatives?
Barcelona is not a priori the ideal city to create; it is small, it is peripheral, there is no market, we are not very connected… creatively we are a village. But this also has its advantages and those who haven’t left yet have to learn to enjoy them. Nowadays it doesn’t matter where you live, but enjoy where you live.

Swab on Paper

Swab presents Swab on Paper 2021

Montoro12

Transmitter

Swab on Paper, curated by Carolina Diez-Cascón, presents for this new edition a selection of 6 projects that come together in the search to communicate the present under the reinterpreted technique of collage, taking its roots in immediacy, as well as the expression of the collection of the object and the value of the artist himself. As Marcel Duchamp said: the «found object», according to which whatever an artist chooses is sacred as «art».

The collage leaves its most purist technique (form) and transfers its conceptual dimension to digital, photographic and pictorial fields as a tool to capture the current history of each artist, so that its collecting essence plays with the most personal language of each one by grouping and associating elements or new realities to the meaning of their own thought or social opinion.

“The definition of the present extends between a forward and a backward. The backward limit is simple: it is the passage from the present to what is becoming the past, that is, today, the immediate. But going forward is where the real problem lies, because the definitions and boundaries are not as clear and clear as one might think.” Erançois Bédarida, Definition, method and practice of the History of the Present Tense.

Following the reflection of Bédarida, and taking the notion of the present time as the lived experience, Swab on Paper is a journey through 6 projects that speak intimately of each of the selected artists, 6 proposals that reflect their instincts and internal reflections influenced by the social conditions of the present.

Swab Reading is a program that seeks to merge design and reading, art and publishing. This edition, Swab continues to create a space for publishing disciplines and invites two international projects to exhibit their books: Monorhetorik, the publishing house of Dutch visual artist Matt Plezier, and American artist Rafael Meléndez.
Through their art on paper, Pleizer and Meléndez explore the different concepts of abstract forms in urban spaces, metaphors against the homogeneous, the uniform, and the polished.

Today we talk to Jordi Coll, an actor trained in theater and musical comedy.

I am Jordi Coll. I am art. I am Barcelona. I am Swab.

A word that describes Barcelona?
Walk around

Is your place of creation, the studio, inspired by your city?
Absolutely. During rehearsal periods, what I do most is walk around the city, stopping to read the text, memorize it…

If Barcelona was an art work, what would you name it?
Step by step

A place in the city that connects you with art?
The bar of Sala Beckett

A message to young creatives?
Move as much as they can. Explore creative avenues or different scenic forms. Soak up what others don’t do. Music, painting, theater, … everything. We are in a very fucked up time. The best we can do is to tell it in every possible way and without fear.
