SISSI club

Marseille
emerging program

SISSI club is a gallery based in Marseille. Established in April 2019, it is run by two curators with a background in art history, Elise Poitevin and Anne Vimeux, and is joined by the graphic design of Marie-Mam Sai Bellier. It first opened as a project space dedicated to supporting emerging artists, questioning the geographic dynamics of contempory art. In 2022, SISSI club embraced the gallery model to enhance its relationship with a group of represented artists. The approach adopted emphasises personal emporwernment through reseach and fiction, and explores the politics of space and bodies through decolonial, queer, inclusive and ecological positions.

For SWAB 2024, SISSI club present a solo show by artist Mailys Moanda with a body of work produced over two years, as a fragmented narrative to be reconstructed and re-screened. Through her practice of painting and sculpture, she explores notions of intimacy, the self and the body, giving an almost performative aspect to her work. Through this acidic story-telling, referencing bad painting and a 1980s nanar, Maïlys Moanda questions the place of the black body within it, and reveals a form of melancholy, even deep sadness, as she recomposes what she calls «her recollection», commenting on her memory, her experiences.
