emerging PROGRAM
NEVEN is a contemporary art gallery established in East London in 2023. NEVEN champions emerging British and international artists working across all mediums, whose practices and research speak to contemporary conditions and interrogate the fault lines of society, popular culture, urban life and society. NEVEN encourages cross-disciplinary pollination within the arts, with exhibitions accompanied by texts spanning artist in-conversations to short fiction and poetry, as well as performance and listening parties.

NEVEN’s presentation by Fern O’Carolan and Jen O’Farrell looks to material cultures as ways of re-imagining tradition, reaction and futurity. O’Farrell’s textural paintings result from research conducted in Japan into local sustainable materials and the use of organic materials in reaction to the country’s rapid industrialisation. O’Carolan processes her coming of age within the Irish Catholic tradition through textile works that explore imagery and material’s potential to both empower and constrict femininity. Using latex, metal, and imagery drawn from vintage magazines and soft-core pornography, her soft sculptures and wall-based works explore image and material’s capacity to both evoke and disrupt systems of power and belief. NEVEN is sharing a booth with fellow London-based gallery SPLIT on the occasion of SWAB Art Fair.
