WE SPEAK WITH DOMENICO DE CHIRICO
Independent curator and art editor Domenico de Chirico, born in Bari in 1983, lives and works in Milan. From 2011 until 2015 he taught courses in Visual Culture and Trend Research at Milan’s European Institute of Design (IED). He collaborates with numerous international galleries, artists and magazines worldwide.
Since 2016 he has been appointed artistic director of DAMA Fair, Turin. He is also visiting tutor at Goldsmiths, University of London (2018).
Which are the current trends that you find the most interesting?
I am not interested in trends at all, so I try to run off them as far as possible. On the other hand, when it comes to artistic disciplines, I feel attracted to different forms of art within my personal understanding of them: painting as a stream of consciousness, videoart as a pure moving image, and sculpture as a manifestation of the artist’s alter ego.
How do you imagine art in the next five years?
In a present moment when we are transiting from one historical epoch to another, I can only say: “Ai posteri l’ardua sentenza”, which means “posterity will judge”.
What does an artwork need to catch your eye?
My interest lies in the whole visual proposal and the physical evolution of the medium itself. As for any particular trait I look for in a piece of art, I find it very appealing when an artistic process evolves without being compromised by market dynamics and keeps its essence intact through its journey.
Why should people come to Swab?
What I find very attractive about Swab is its democratic will: the fair offers a perfect balance between emerging proposals and well established projects. Furthermore, it provides the visitor with a very interesting portrait of what is happening on the international artistic scene, reuniting galleries and independent spaces from all over the world.
All in all, I believe that people should go to Swab to keep their curiosity alive.
